Art Season: NYC Gallery Openings (Free)

It’s that time of year again: Art Season! Contemporary art can be a bit overwhelming in NYC, so here are a couple ISH gallery opening recommendations to get you started.


Sol Lewitt’s Cube with Scribble Bands in Four Directions at the Paula Cooper Gallery (534 W. 21st Street). Opening night Friday, September 6.


Greg Haberny’s Burn All Crayons at the Lyons Wier Gallery (542 W. 24th Street). Opening night Friday, September 6.


Blek le Rat’s Ignorance is Bliss at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery (529 W. 20th Street, 9th Floor). Opening night Saturday, September 7, 7pm – 9pm.


Socrates Sculpture Park’s EAF13: 2013 Emerging Artist Fellowship Exhibition. Opening day Sunday, September 8, from 2 – 6pm. Site-specific new works by fifteen artists to watch. Location: 32-01 Vernon Boulevard at Broadway, Long Island City.


Hayv Kahraman’s Let the Guest be the Master at the Jack Shainman Gallery (524 W. 24th Street). Opening night Tuesday, September 10, 5pm – 8pm.


Art: Hank Willis Thomas Exhibiting at the Jack Shainman Gallery (Free)


Jack Shainman Gallery, located at 524 W. 24th Street, is exhibiting Hank Willis Thomas’ much talked about Question Bridge: Black Males. The transmedia project is a five-channel video installation that focuses on black male identity in the US. The thought-provoking installation will run through Friday, August 23. Chris Johnson, Kamal Sinclair and Bayete Ross-Smith were collaborators on the project.

Art: Chelsea Art Block Party hosted by Jack Shainman Gallery (Free)


Jack Shainman is hosting an art block party today, Thursday, July 11, from 6pm – 8pm. Festivities will take place at Shainman’s new 2,400 square-foot gallery on 24th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues: 524 W. 24th Street.
