The 8th Annual Latin American Cultural Week will take place November 14 – 25, 2013. Latin American Culture Week facilitates performances by many institutions and artists throughout New York City. Presentations consist of music, dance, film, theater, literature, visual and performing arts influenced by the diverse cultures of Latin America. Participants: American Symphony Orchestra, the World Music Institute, Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Instituto Cervantes, Americas Society, Brazilian Endowment for the Arts, Centro Civico Cultural Dominicano, and Repertorio Español.

Art: BEAT Festival 2013 Opening Night at the Brooklyn Museum

BEAT is a yearly performing arts festival that features the best Brooklyn talent in the areas of theater, dance & voice. The festival will take place at selected Brooklyn venues and will host events such as Museum MashUps, Brooklyn 63 and Freestyle Mondays. Opening night is tomorrow, Thursday, September 12, 7pm at the Brooklyn Museum (200 Eastern Parkway). The festival runs from September 12th – September 21st.

Farewell Summer 2013 is a fundraiser that benefits the Ajile L. Turner Scholarship Foundation, an organization that awards students who demonstrate academic achievement and a desire to work in the arts & entertainment industries through entrepreneurial pursuit. The fundraiser will be held on Thursday, September 12, at the Galapagos Art Space in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Expected performances by Common, Yahzarah, Darien Brockington, Candace Coles and the Strivers Row Poetry Collective. Supporter: $50. Friend: $75. VIP: $125.

Summer Streets is an annual celebration of New York City’s most valuable public space—our streets. On three consecutive Saturdays in August (3rd, 10th, 17th), nearly seven miles of NYC’s streets are opened for people to walk, run, bike, and play. Summer Streets provides space for healthy recreation and encourages New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation.

Open to pedestrians for the first time in history, the Park Avenue Tunnel, which runs from 33rd Street to 40th Street, will be open to pedestrians at the 33rd Street entrance between the hours of 7 am and 1 pm. The Tunnel will host Voice Tunnel, an interactive light and sound installation by Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer.

Independence Day: International African Arts Festival

This July 4th, explore African dance, art and culture at the 42nd Annual International African Arts Festival in Brooklyn. This year’s theme is NDUNGA (Justice from the Congo). The festival takes place at Commodore Barry Park, Navy Street (Park and Flushing Aves) from 9am – 10pm. Free.
